Grandma's Gems
“…on the day that I make them my jewels. And I will spare them as a man spares his
own son who serves him.” (Malachi 3:17)
Nothing can make your heart go pitter patter like being a grandmother. I love that statement, “when a child is born so is a grandmother.” It is still hard for me to believe at times that I am a grandmother. You see, I lost a child several years back and never thought I would have the privilege of loving another child.
Don’t get me wrong, I still long for my son every day that I spend apart from him. Somehow, I have been able to find peace in knowing that my son is in the best place of all. He is with His Heavenly Father. That has been my sustaining peace.
Nothing could give me greater joy than that of being a grandmother. Now, I have the chance to teach my “gems” all the things I longed to teach my son.
Nevertheless, once I married my husband and realized I would be a stepmother it began a whole new chapter in my life. God was able to bless me in a very unique way by giving me four beautiful grandchildren. Because of this, I have never been more grateful for the experience of sharing my love for another person than sharing it with my grandchildren. The experience has indulged me.
Sharing this love with my grandchildren has created moments I will cherish for the rest of my life. It has been a call of mine to share God’s love with my “gems” in ways they may never have known otherwise. This has challenged me to be an example in front of them.
We love encouraging them to come to church with us. This is an awesome opportunity to hear about His love. It also teaches them how to respect God’s word and to memorize scripture in their hearts. Nevertheless, it is a task that I have chosen to take with each one of my grand children.
We do this in hopes that this opportunity will give them a better outlook on life as they grow up and teach them important skills they will one day use to minister to others. What an awesome goal to teach our grandchildren the ways of the Lord our Savior, Jesus Christ?
By doing this, it teaches my “gems” how to read and to understand the word of God. While they are reading and learning the scripture the best way they know how, it then teaches them to hide the Word of God in their hearts. It also makes them pay attention and retain those words.
“My son, give attention to my words. Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them.” (Proverbs 4:20-22)
As Proverbs states, they that read them will find life. What an awesome thing that the scripture points out. It causes you to pay attention and listen to what He is telling you. If you don’t you may find yourself discouraged.
Our souls are like that of child who is learning to walk in the ways of the Lord. They must be reminded to keep on track and be focused on what God wants to teach them. Are you watching? Are you listening for what God’s wants for you to learn? Finally, are you hiding the Word of God in your heart?
